Railway lighting solution improves safety and working conditions at train yard

Late 2023 we were able to solve a crucial problem for Prorail: they needed full and safe lighting of pathways in their train yard in Den Bosch, and could not use traditional lighting methods.

With speed, quality and cost being important factors, this project properly showcased the crucial need for, and ease of the Railpuck railway lighting solution.

The problem: no possibilities for traditional railway lighting methods

There was a crucial problem which couldn’t be solved with traditional methods. It was not possible to equip this train yard with masts or fixtures mounted on tension cables. The solution therefore required ingenuity, while at the same time it still needed to fit into the budget for lighting renovations.

The innovative Railpuck railway lighting was the solution

Firstly, the plug-and-play luminaire could be installed by hand within the railway tracks, completely removing the need for expensive and time-consuming traditional lighting methods. Furthermore, the 460 meters were installed in record time, meaning the train yard was only out of service for a brief period: much less than traditional methods. Last but not least, the Railpuck luminaire was clearly the most cost-effective option all things considered: the total cost of ownership (TCO) was significantly less than for traditional alternatives.

By looking from the perspective of a technician and the environment in which they work, we designed the Railpuck system to make installation simple and intuitive. This results in a reduced chance of errors during installation, which in turn leads to increased reliability and guaranteed results.”

The result? Railway lighting that is safe, easy and cost-effective

The NS train yard in Den Bosch now has proper, safe lighting of pathways that reaches the needed places. Employees can work safely and confidently knowing that any obstruction or danger is highlighted by the innovative grazing light emitted from the Railpuck. With its shields, the Railpuck also prevents light from escaping upwards, therefore putting a stop to further light pollution in an already bright Dutch sky.
